Over 2000 years before the pyramids, the Ceide (pronounced Kayja) fields were formed in the west of Ireland. What is now an underground city under excavation, is also the most extensive stone age monument in the world. It was originally a collection of fields, defined by stone walls built by local farmers that stretched for miles. Over centuries they became the foundations of a sprawling metropolis. While little is known of the early inhabitants of earth's possible first city, the idea that these farmers became warriors, as potential foreign invaders may have posed a threat to their livelyhoods, is not beyond the realms of imagination. Evidence suggests that, be they farmers, warriors or both, they prevailed and created a sophisticated and highly advanced society that prospered for centuries. But what did they look like? Druids, shamans, sorcerors, simple farmers or a blend of other worldly creatures. The archeological dig on what is now a heritage site continues in County Mayo on Ireland's west coast. In the meantime myth and legend provide ample sustenence for the senses.
