How do we know if an artwork is good or not?

We've all heard it said that art is subjective and it’s true! But how often are we so easily convinced that an artwork is great, simply because it's on display, and even when we just don't get it.

Is there an art establishment dressing room somewhere overflowing with the emperor's new clothes, or are we missing something.  How do we decide what’s really good? 

So the best place to start is a gallery, either online or on the street. Start browsing the works and if something is going to catch your eye, you'll find that it probably already has. Don't over think it. If you’re drawn to a piece and like it, then it’s good right! Remember it's subjective and gut instinct is key, which is why we suggest viewing the works before reading the curator’s introduction and artist’s biography or statement. This may seem like an unusual approach, but despite it’s relevance, this information can sometimes suffocate the art before it’s had a chance to breathe.

If a painting, installation, photograph etc. is fully resolved, then it’s a complete entity unto itself, not withstanding its relationship to the other works on display. Give it the time it deserves. After all, you alone are the judge, jury and executioner and we’d like to think -  the curator of your own mind.
